Last year, I spent 2 days a week at Lackham College, studying for the RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles and Practices of Horticulture.

I wanted to challenge myself, to increase my knowledge and make sure the gardening skills I am passing on are right up to date.

It was a fantastic year, I enjoyed every moment of it!

Although I have only just completed the RHS course, I have been gardening for over 30 years. We moved from a small flat to a large 3 acre garden in 1993. Thankfully 2 acres were paddocks, maintained by horses and beautiful Herefordshire cattle.

The garden area was almost entirely on a slope, with overgrown trees and shrubs of all sorts and the wonderful surprise of a huge bank of snowdrops and daffodils in the spring.

We gradually terraced some areas, giving us plenty of space for children to play football, run around and explore, make dens and play hide & seek.

I created areas of shrubbery, a large herbaceous border and many smaller areas of planting along the side of steps and walls. An area of wild flowers developed naturally on an area of very poor soil, over a period of 5 years. The joy of spotting the first Orchid, or seeing a new species make a home and the range of butterflies attracted to it, was wonderful.  Maintain the area and increasing the number of wild flowers required careful management, cutting the grass at just the right time of year - usually very early spring and again in early autumn.

I can't resist buying new plants at gardens we visit, or garden centre visits and I have grown many plants from seeds or cuttings.

I love experimenting.

Not every plant has survived - a strong west wind, north facing and in a frost pocket in the winter months, have been a challenge!

We moved to a new house last year... new house, new garden project!  We have brought light in to the house and garden by reducing the height of some hedges and lifted the lower branches to open up the space. I'm very happy to have a garden filled with colour right next to the house, so I can see flowers as soon as I come downstairs in the morning.

My passion is growing flowers for cutting, so I can enjoy the sight and perfume of vases of flowers all around the house and plenty to create small bouquets to give as gifts. I love being able to look at a tiny flower close up, to enjoy it's perfect beauty.. sometimes even when they are wilting! Tulips can be spectacular right until the last petal drops!

I have grown a range of colours of cornflower this year, from white, white and pink, mauve, purple as well as the beautiful blue... they are all stunning!

My mission now is to share my knowledge with other budding gardeners, so they can enjoy the health benefits and joy of gardening as much as I do!
